What Is Your Floss Made Of?

Most floss on the drugstore shelf is nylon or PTFE, the same chemical family as Teflon, coated in synthetic wax and sold in a plastic box you throw away. In 2019, researchers at the Silent Spring Institute reported that women who used PTFE based floss had higher blood levels of PFAS, the group known as forever chemicals. Not long after, one of the biggest floss brands quietly dropped Teflon from its flagship product.

Think about what floss actually does. You slide it between your teeth and along your gums every day, in one of the most absorbent parts of your body.

So we made ours from bamboo fiber, infused with charcoal, and wound it into a carved bamboo case with a built in cutter. When the spool runs out, you keep the case. It is the kind of object you leave out on purpose.

What is the floss made of?

Is it really free from PFAS coatings?

The floss is bamboo fiber, not PTFE. PTFE is the Teflon family plastic that a 2019 Silent Spring Institute study associated with higher blood levels of forever chemicals in regular users. Avoiding that material entirely is exactly why we built this floss the way we did.

Does it shred?

It is made to resist it. The charcoal infused fiber holds together through tight contacts better than most natural floss, and glides without the snap that thin waxy floss is known for. Like any floss, be gentle around dental work.

How long does one spool last?

50 meters is 164 feet. At a typical arm's length per day, that is several months of daily flossing from a single spool.

How does the cutter work?

Pull the length you need and press the floss against the small metal cutter set into the cap, the same motion as a plastic dispenser. It cuts clean and stays out of the way.
